In The Beginning
Alex Sanchez is a New York City based director/choreographer of Puerto Rican heritage. He spent his childhood in both his native Chicago and Puerto Rico. He began his dance training on scholarship at Lou Conte Dance Studio and furthered his training at The Ruth Page Foundation of Chicago. Alex later joined Ballet Chicago and danced four seasons with the company. During his time with Ballet Chicago, he would moonlight performing in musicals at various venues in the Chicago theater district. This experience lead to his first Broadway show, THE RED SHOES.
In New York
Now on Broadway, Alex would spend the next 14 years performing in ten broadway shows as well as off broadway City Center Encores and various top regional theaters in the country. He was in the original broadway companies of THE RED SHOES, CAROUSEL Lincoln Center Revival, BIG THE MUSICAL, FOSSE, FOLLIES Roundabout Revival, CHITTY CHITTY BANG BANG, and CHITA RIVERA, THE DANCERS LIFE. He was a replacement in ONCE UPON A MATTRESS, WONDERFUL TOWN and LOVE! VALOR!

The Actor
Though Alex started out as a dancer, his performing resume also includes various acting and singing principle roles. Always interested in acting and Shakespeare, Alex joined the Chicago Shakespeare Theatres acting training program. He studied acting and the first folio technique. In New York he continued his acting training with Shakespeare and Company as well as The Manhattan Edge School for acting. His training got him cast in the Tony award winning Broadway play, LOVE! VALOR! COMPASSION! He was the standby and performed the role of Ramon Fornos. Later he played opposite Kristen Chenowith in The Goodspeed Opera’s production of STRIKE UP THE BAND, Penguin Reps production of John Leguizamo’s one man play, MAMBO MOUTH, Dallas Shakespeare Festival’s production of THE TEMPEST, playing the role of Ariel, City Center Encores production of NEW MOON, in the role of Jaques the Pirate.
His Teachers
Alex not only worked with the best performing talents in the world but also the best directors and choreographers. This gave him a daily master class on creating theater. Working with theater luminaries like Lar Lubavitch, Susan Stroman, Kathleen Marshall, Nick Hytner, Joe Mantello, Gillian Lynne, Mike Ockrent, Gerald Gutierez, Richard Maltby Jr., Christopher Ashley, Gary Griffin, Mathew Warcus, John Doyle, Michael Greif and Graciela Daniela, gave him the lessons and theatrical insights that he brings to his work as a director and choreographer.
Approach
Alex’s diverse career in both acting and dancing, has given him an in-depth understanding of theatrical storytelling and how to break down the intention of the plays text. He uses his love of history to do exhaustive research on all of his projects. That is why Alex’s approach to any work is always through the lens of finding the most truthful answer to express the piece.
